Preparing Students for Life — Not Only University

Around the world, educators, parents, and universities are asking an increasingly important question:

Are we preparing students only to perform academically — or also preparing them to thrive as human beings?

Students today are more accomplished than ever before academically, yet schools globally are observing rising levels of:

  • anxiety,
  • social disconnection,
  • dependence on structure,
  • fear of failure,
  • reduced resilience,
  • and difficulty navigating uncertainty.

At the same time, leading universities and employers increasingly value:

  • leadership,
  • collaboration,
  • adaptability,
  • emotional intelligence,
  • intercultural competence,
  • communication,
  • initiative,
  • and resilience.

These are precisely the kinds of outcomes historically associated with one of the world’s most overlooked educational traditions:

Camp Education

What Is Camp Education?

Camp Education is not simply recreation, entertainment, or childcare.

It is the intentional developmental use of:

  • experience,
  • community,
  • challenge,
  • reflection,
  • mentorship,
  • responsibility,
  • and play

to help young people grow socially, emotionally, physically, and personally.

Historically, many of the founders of organized camp were educators themselves, and camp emerged as a response to concerns about modern childhood, disconnection, and the limitations of traditional schooling alone.

Today, Camp Education sits at the intersection of:

  • experiential learning,
  • whole-child education,
  • leadership development,
  • residential education,
  • outdoor education,
  • and social-emotional learning.
